Live News Cameras
Came across this web project that is only a couple days old, produced by Fox News Chicago. It's a website called LiveNewsCameras.com. Basically, it brings together all the live feeds from all the Fox News affiliates into one page, where you can click on a geographic area to check in. However, what's really interesting is they have a live "NJ" (news jockey, like a disc jockey or video jockey) who is hosting in realtime, showcasing news elements.
It's an interesting combination of web tools to see what's going on around the country. |

Looks interesting. I am not a huge fan of Faux Newz, though. But it is a unique concept. I tried clicking on Chicago but it never loaded (or it was slow and I was impatient.) Also the cities aren't listed alphabetically which was kind of irksome.

Yeah, we won't get into the editorial nature of Fox and its news operations (though I'd say they are pretty much at the bottom of the barrel... the local sides being better than the cable network).
What I found interesting is that this totally seems to be a locally-driven initiative by the Chicago station. Not a corporately built slick site or some sort of greater marketing mandate. Just sort of a neat side project. |

When I worked as a news intern at a CBS station in Rockford, I got to sit in the master control room all the time between shifts. There they had all the signals from around the country being pulled together on multiple monitors. This reminds me a lot of that.
It should also be mentioned that over the past year or so, Fox has been moving all their television stations to the "MyFox" platform, changing up the website addresses, but beyond that, using a new template system and backend for all stations. For example, here in Chicago, they went from FoxChicago.com to MyFoxChicago.com, moving to a standardized color scheme, interface, etc. The "My" branding is something Fox is pushing hard. As you may already know, Fox Interactive owns MySpace, and the network also owns MyNetworkTV, so it makes sense to move their news operations that direction. I'm going to guess that the only way that this new site is able to pull all this stuff off is due to the move of all these stations to a common platform. Overall, kinda an exciting project. |

Not intuitive for a regular person, but as TV folk, they probably sorted it that way by default. |

I just sent these folks an e-mail with some technical suggestions (web stuff) and they acknowledged it on-air within 2 minutes of me sending it. Wild!

with in 2-minutes? Either they have a very good response time or a very bored account manager.

More upgrades to report. The listings of feeds can now be alphabetical, reverse ABC, or Random. They've also added a lot more non-FOX feeds, and broken the feeds into two categories... news feeds and weather satellite feeds.
Design has been improved to fix some formatting issues (which is what I e-mailed them about a few weeks ago). It's looking sharper. Additionally, the pool of moderators has expanded beyond just the folks at Fox Chicago (which birthed the project). I've seen a moderator from Milwaukee show up... and later in the day, some folks from LA get online. Overall, interesting to see this progress, especially the mixture of technologies. I especially am noting their unique use of Twitter as a broadcast mechanism to draw attention to various news happenings on the feeds. |

I got here late, but I love it. I blogged about it here, including a video where the moderator greets me: http://kidologist.com/?p=969

New feature added... an E-mail button. So instead of having to use an e-mail client to write to info@livenewscameras.com, you can use a web-based form to send messages. Nice improvement to user interface.

Steve and I are having a discussion about the chicago moderator today. He seems really nervous on camera.
