It's all about the strings today on Steve's 25 Days of Christmas Music
. Yup, we've got two Dueling December Ditties
that feature a heavy emphasis on stringed instruments. So what's the tune? How about Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
?! (And if you watched the new Muppets Christmas special that was on NBC
, you'll know that Santa is not only coming to town, but he's also British!
Let's start with some guitar done in the style of Django Reinhardt with a rendition performed by The Gypsy Hombres
. I last featured them during 2006's Under the Tree, A to Z collection
. I liked the group so much, I bought their Christmas album. Highly recommended. You should do the same
. They play what is known as the "Hot Club" style, noted for having both a lead guitar and backing rhythm guitar.
Stepping back in time a bit is a 1968 recording by a group known as The Soulful Strings
. It's definitely somewhat of a dated sound, but I like how "peppy" and upbeat this version is. The group was actually fronted by a guy named Richard Evans who was big in the Chicago soul-jazz movement in the late 60s and 70s with his mastery of the bass, defining a unique "sound" known for unusually orchestrated string sections. He recorded 7 records as "The Soulful Strings". (And yes, we have featured another song from them in the past. Look for their tune as part of 2005's Amazing Vinyl ADVENTure
Just a heads up that we're sharing another download here on the site until December 26. It's the 1960's storyteller LP version of A Charlie Brown Christmas
. You might want to go check that out!
