Coming Soon: 24 Clue

Just when you thought it was safe, it looks like Hasbro is rolling out another version of their boardgame Clue -- a Steve & Amy favorite as long-time readers know. This version is based on the FOX television show 24.

First spotted on eBay as part of a presale, then discussed in length on TheArtofMurder.com, this would seem to be the 3rd adaptation of a TV show into a Clue game (following Scooby Doo Clue and The Simpsons Clue).

TDMonthly.com, a trade magazine for the toy & game industry, talked with the folks at USAopoly, which is the company that Hasbro usually contracts with when doing special editions like this.

The description they were provided noted that "the 24 Clue game is the first and only Clue game that allows die-hard 24 fans to work with Jack Bauer to prevent an imminent attack on the United States by solving “WHO” the traitor is, “WHAT” kind of attack is planned, and “WHERE” inside CTU will it happen."

Tagline hints that this uses the new rules

From the looks of the gameboard, specifically the use of the "Question Mark" spaces and the pawns, this seems to use the same game mechanics that were introduced in the recent Clue Reinvention game (also known as Clue: Discover the Secrets), which Hasbro has been marketing as the main version of Clue. This is supported by the subtitle on the box: "Uncover the Secrets inside CTU".

Amy & I own the new Reinvention version and have played it. While we weren't fans of the rewrite on the Clue mythos, we have to admit that the new mechanics & rules were great editions to the classic boardgame. As fans of 24 since Season 1, Episode 1, if that same rule set is applied here, this should be a pretty nice addition to the Clue universe.

Estimated release date is April 9, 2009. Looking forward to it!

TEXT ME A CLUE: Hasbro Inc. has extended many of its classic board games in new ways, from a Jenga Max game that builds outward instead of up and down and Trivial Pursuit Team game that allows players to get partial credit for answers. But the most innovative update is a new Clue game called Clue: Secrets & Spies Edition, in which users can use text messaging on their own cell phones to enhance game play. The goal of the game is to complete missions before being discovered by an Agent Black. Users can text a number when they start the game and will receive updates about the game every eight minutes. Hasbro said it is committed to maintaining text messaging support through Dec. 31, 2011. The game will be available in the fall for $24.99.
