Trim the Tree Travels - December 22: Christmas Island
Destination: Christmas Island
Yes, there actually is a place called Christmas Island. Actually, there are 2! One is about 1,000 miles south of Hawaii in the Pacific and is also called Kiritimati. The other is a territory of Australia in the Indian ocean found south of Indonesia... and is more commonly known as Christmas Island. It's actually 1,600 miles away from Australia and joined that country in 1957, after the government paid off Singapore £2.9 million in compensation.
About 1,400 people live there and its tourism folks play up the natural wonders, flora, and fauna. I'm not sure if this was the location that the Andrews Sisters were singing about in 1946, with their song making its way up to #7 on the charts, backed by Guy Lombardo & his Royal Canadians. However, it is one of the more exotic destinations on our "Trim the Tree Travels" -- especially after we battled pirates yesterday!
Don't get too comfy, however... because tomorrow's destination has eternal consequences!
