Always keeping you on the cutting edge of the beverage industry, here's some news regarding a new flavor of Mountain Dew:

The trade publication Beverage Digest reported Friday that Pepsi may try a product with the name Mountain Dew Pitch Black. There was no indication of a possible flavor for the soft drink. As with LiveWire, such a new product would likely be sold as a short-term brand that would be in the market for a limited time. Pepsi spokesman Dave DeCecco declined to comment. "We're always looking at new ideas," he said.

Anyone want to place some guesses on what the flavor of black is?

Maybe it will be like a dark cherry? or a traditional cola but with something odd in it like Guarana or triple caffeine or Ephedra or something. I might taste it but it seems that all new colas are gross (to me) Code Red, w/Lemon, w/Lime, Blue etc. Maybe this tastes like licorice or something.

I could totally see it being a black cherry/cassis with licorice flavor. Otherwise, my guess is tar.

Personally, I'm leaning towards black cherry. That could be quite tasty.

During Pepsi's second-quarter conference call last Thursday, it was confirmed that Pepsi will be rolling out Mountain Dew Pitch Black for the Halloween season.
Still now word on what that will taste like.
UPDATE: Pepsi's Press Release mentions "a "limited time only" innovation, grape-infused Mountain Dew Pitch Black, available during the Halloween holiday"

Hey, just found an image of what potentially might be the packaging for this product:
The flavor appears to be "black grape". We'll see!

Sounds good. I've always liked grape-flavored pop.

I drink maybe 2 sodas a month, was driving back from a road trip last Saturday and a bit tired and didn't want more Starbucks so I stopped in and got a Pitch Black. I thought it had a strange taste; I tasted the grape but it was also something like pine cones also. Don't think I'd get it again and I wouldn't have if Mountain Dew wasn't discussed in The Water Cooler so much.
Back in 1983 a bicycle racing team I started was sponsored by Pepsi (they still are, if you see anyone in a Pepsi jersey in the Chicago area they ride for Blue Horizon Wheelmen, created at my kitchen table in 1980). Anyway, Nationals that year were in San Diego and we loaded up the van with cases and cases of Pepsi and Mountain Dew, it was all free. Most of us drank so much of the stuff we couldn't touch it for years - I still can't drink Pepsi.

I tried Pitch Black a few weeks ago and I didn't enjoy it and wouldn't drink it again. If I'm going to drink all the caffeine I'd rather drink the original.

love it!
I recently tasted Pitch Black and I LOVE it! So far one of the best tasting American carbonated beverages (that I have not made from scratch myself). Is it true they are going to stop making it now that it is past Halloween?! ARRGGH! I should have stocked up or something. In my opinion, this is WAY better than the Red mountain dew or the Orange one, or even the original Green one. (hmm, homeland security should just use Mountain Dew bottles)
