Coke Blak: Taste Review

Being a sucker for new products (especially food related ones) I decided to buy the new Coke Blak - Coca-Colas new Coke + coffee hybrid drink -- when I spotted it in the Walgreen's.

First I have to note that it is an 8oz bottle and it retails for $1.99. Considering that a 12oz. bottle of regular Coke goes for about $0.70 this seems ridiculous.

Upon pouring it into a clear glass I notice that is looks like Guinness. Much darker color than regular Coke and you can smell the "coffee extract." It smells like instant coffee and caramel.

I split the bottle between 2 other guys at work and here are their comments:

Rob: "It tastes like Kahlua but without the alcohol. Not great but not disgusting. I'll never buy it."

Taylor: "Man, this is gross. It's like cold coffee with fizzies. Can I dump it out?"

It's definitely not as gross as I thought it would be. It tastes like a watered down iced coffee with carbonation. It's kind of soft tasting, like cotton candy dipped in espresso. It has a coffee aftertaste amd it's fairly sweet (aspertame and corn syrup). I wasn't repulsed by it but I won't be pruchasing it again.

Thanks for the review, Fern. Amy and I wrote up a review over the weekend as well... I'll probably post it later this week. But I think we are thinking along the same lines

Marketeers were handing out free Coke Blech to Metra commuters last week.

Seen on an evening rush hour train: five train buddies sitting side-by-side on the upper level, daring each other to be the first to try it. finally, they agreed to sample it simultaneously. And simultaneously did they all exclaim, "Ugh! That's (insert mild or not so mild explitive here)!"

Seriously, five for five proclaimed their disgust.

Someone brought a bottle back to work and we put little samples in plastic cups. Seven of us tried it. Not one person liked it.

What a train wreck.

I just picked up a couple of bottles this morning, they were on sale at Albertson's (Oops, I mean Jewel). They're on ice right now in the Jeep, hang on a minute while I go out and sample.

(two minutes later) I give it a big thumbs-up, that's some tasty stuff. However, we may need to factor in that 1) I have been living in a Starbucks the last 3 days to use their hotspot (dial-up doesn't cut it for 7MB files and tons of e-mail) and 2) I drink coffee that holds a spoon upright and could be used to fill cracks in asphalt. I'd buy it again but not for more than a buck a bottle (current sale price).
