Lighthouse Voyage - Part 20

Trekking Home

As the late afternoon sun was high in the sky, we departed Port Washington, WI, and began our drive homeward. After 3 days of intense traveling and 15 lighthouses explored, we were tired!

To keep ourselves awake for the multi-hour trip south, we stopped off at gas station to pick up straight sugar and caffeine. Nothing quite like a king-size Snickers bar and a bottle of Mountain Dew to keep your eyes peeled on the road.

As we drove through Sheboygan, we were near the location of our honeymoon, Kohler, WI. One of these days we'd like to get back to Kohler... but I'll have to sell a kidney first!

Nearer to home was Kenosha, always a great place to stop off to eat or get gas. But in our case, we put our hands to our forehead and saluted the marvelous Mars Cheese Castle. You may be asking yourself, "What the heck?"

Back when my sister and I were in high school, we volunteered over many weekends during the school year at Phantom Ranch. It was nothing big... usually helping out in the kitchen or washing dishes. Of course, this was back when camp actually cared a little, so each Friday night they would send a station wagon down to Chicago to pick up volunteers who had agreed to help with weekend retreats. There was this one guy, Kevin Lewis, who always would force my sister and I to salute the Mars Cheese Castle as we drove up to camp, because it "represented all that is good and honest in the state of Wisconsin." Um, yeah. Nevertheless, the funny tradition has stuck with me... and now Amy and I salute out of habit! Incidentally, the business is over 45 years old!

Soon we crossed the border into Illinois, faced a little traffic, and found ourselves pulling up in front of our apartment. After unloading the car, we just crashed. Talk about a trip that packed in a lot of stuff over just 3 days. But of course we felt a great sense of accomplishment. And maybe next time we'll hit some of the lighthouses we missed.

Can someone say Lighthouse Voyage 2?

Driving by the Mars Cheese Castle will no longer be the same!

Has anyone actually stopped there?

I never have, ironically.

On my recent business trip to Racine, WI, I passed the Mars Cheese Castle and saluted in honor.
